OAC Logo Competition - We have a winner

The admin team would like your help in choosing a logo to represent the Open Anthropology Cooperative. We have narrowed down member submissions to a short list of 8 options.

One item which has been pending since the creation of the OAC one year ago is an iconic logo representing the Open Anthropology Cooperative. There have been debates about the form and function of our activities here and the atmosphere and structure of our discussions. The OAC potentially means something distinct to each of us, and we are now at an important stage in moving forward, with the aid of the entire membership, to solidify our role within the anthropological community. It seems fitting to launch a logo design competition to mark our one year anniversary and to give all members an opportunity to contribute to the identity of the site which we have each helped to construct.
The admin team would therefore like to encourage design submissions for a logo to represent the Open Anthropology Cooperative. If chosen, your design will appear on the header of this page as the official logo as well as on other OAC-related sites and initiatives, including the OAC Press. It will help to solidify our identity and recognition of the OAC and its 3,400+ members.
The theme and style of the design is entirely open. Feel free to be inspired by the Cooperative’s diversity of membership, its ambitious aims in promoting wider participation in anthropological discussion, encouraging cooperation and inspiring innovation, or any other experiences that you’ve had here. You are also welcome to share the "story" behind your design.
The deadline for submissions is July 28, 2010. Voting on the designs which meet the specifications detailed below will begin after that time.
How to submit a design:
All designs for the competition must be entered as an embedded image as a response to this thread, not anywhere else on the site. Click on the “camera” icon on the text box toolbar when replying to upload your image. You must choose a .JPG, .GIF or .PNG file of your logo which is not too large to be comfortably viewed on screen. However, keep your large, high-quality and/or lossless source files (if applicable) so that they can be made available if your design is chosen.
Competition rules:
• All submitted work must be original and clearly not an infringement upon any pre-existing design or trademark.
• By entering a logo design in the competition you agree to allow the OAC and its members to transfer and remix the design in a multitude of formats that may appear throughout the web and possibly in other media in the future.
• Entries should not contain any text other than the acronym OAC and/or the words Open Anthropology Cooperative or a reasonable variation.
Technical requirements/recommendations:
• Embedded samples in this thread should be in .jpg .png or .gif format. You can later supply original files for the winning design(s) upon request. Originals can be: .svg .jpg .gif .bmp .pdf .psd .eps .ai or .png.
• The design will be applied to the OAC as a main logo and also as a banner or icon for sites to link back to the OAC, so it should be styled to fit in with a wide variety of website appearances (e.g. dark or light backgrounds). Transparent backgrounds are acceptable.
• It must scale up and down (be able to be re-sized) without distortion, so that it can be used as a small or large icon or banner. The maximum header size on Ning is 925px wide. Tip: Try resizing your design. If it looks really fuzzy or distorted at 50% or 200% of the original size, you may wish to create different sized versions to compensate.
• Scanned, hand-drawn designs can be submitted, but must conform to the rest of the technical requirements.
Helpful tips:
• Think about your audience. The logo should appeal to current and potential site members, anthropologists and non-anthropologists, academics and non-academics.
• Try to use recognizable imagery and/or clean and clear lines to avoid confusion. The best logos are eye-catching, but simple.
• Try to convey a message that is unique, distinguishable and memorable at a glance.
• Are you new to logo design? Not sure where to start? Try a tutorial or download a free graphics editor like The Gimp [Windows] or Seashore [Mac] and see what you can come up with. If you don’t know how to create a logo, but have a good idea, see if you can crowd-source some help from other members. Respond to this thread if you have skills or ideas to offer a collaborative effort.

It will be a bit late but we could try to sell stuff at EASA in August. (Just to complicate life, will the t-shirts come from China? I assume we cannot afford organic. Fair trade cheap?)
I think we could decide on a sum and start to donate to it. Then if the winner is a student or somebody with no job they should have the money but those who have permanent jobs should be happy with the "glory" and listing it in their CV. My such ideas are never popular but I am suggesting anyway.

I am all in favour of introducing money and markets to this sort of thing, Hülya, if only to break down the notion that we are a Brahminical caste who never touch them. The problem is establishing a means of collecting the money. If you want, you could help me set something up.
