I am in Brazil for the moment, to do my fieldwork in anthropology. My research will be on ribeirinhos in the state of Para, Brazil, and i am focusing on identity formation and traditional knowledge in relation to sustainable development. I wondered if any might know some research done on this topic by brazilian anthropologists? I have read most of the works by Mark Harris, Stephen Nugent, Charles Wagley and some of deborah de magalhales Lima, but i am very interested in finding research done by local researchers here.. Any suggestions?

Hi Yngvil, here are some additional references that might be useful. A lot of these researchers have worked in Para. Although many are from outside of Brazil, some are Brazilian. You may also want to get in contact with people at Museu Emilio Goeldi, UFPA, and UFOPA. If you need some help making contacts, let me know and I can pass a few email addresses along. Abraços, Nick.

'llo Lien,

There are a few references that might be useful, although not all of them are related to Para itself.

You should get yourself a copy of "Amazon Peasant Societies in a Changing Environment: Political Ecology, Invisibility and Modernity in the Rainforest". There is a chapter by Henyo Barreto Filho that should be specially helpful, and also very good ones by Adams, Nugent and Harris.

"A Enciclopédia da Floresta" organized by Manuela Carneiro da Cunha and Mauro Almeida should also be helpful. Almeida also have some other papers that might interest you.

As for Magalhães Lima, I would recommend her thesis (attached here), and some of her articles about amazonian household economy ("The Domestic Economy of Mamiraua", and "Transformações na Economia Doméstica de Mamirauá").

Some other useful references:

LIMA, D. M. Equidade, Desenvolvimento Sustentável e Conservação da Biodiversidade. In: CASTRO, E.; PINTON, E. (Org.). Faces do Trópico Úmido - conceitos e questões sobre desenvolvimento e meio ambiente. 1ª ed.

Novos Cadernos NAEA. Belém, vol. 11, n. 2, p. 43-56, 2008.

Hi Yngvil,

At Museu Paraenese Emilio Goeldi, you may want to get in contact with Glenn Shepard (gshepardjr@gmail.com). I also have two friends who are archaeologists at UFOPA in Santarem - Anne Rapp Py-Daniel and Claide de Paula Moraes. They may have some useful contacts for you. Anne's email is anneprd@hotmail and Claide's email is claidepmoraes@hotmail.com

Hi Yngvil,

If you are in the Santarém area, Mauricio Torres, a Brazilian geographer, is a great person to get into contact with. He does research on riberinho communities and their territorial stuggles, specifically on the upper Tapajós. His e-mail is mautorre@gmail.com. He is very welcoming to anyone who is researching these communities. I'm including a link to one of his texts below:
