I'm not a China person except I seem to be reading lots of books about it lately, I guess out of an interest in "alternative modernities" and decentering the west from the narrative of capitalism. If you are still looking for ethnographies of urban China, two things I enjoyed which are not exactly that but are very on the ground are The Spiral Road (about a "village" but it seems like it is becoming a small city)
