Back in the US now, but was in Cambridge and London for most of September. I ended up not needing your flat, but wanted to thank you for the offer. How are things in Russia? Are you doing fieldwork? Another exhibition?

Kolya! I am in Moscow at the moment until 22 October. I'm doing that project on Russia as a development aid donor. Can we meet? 8-921-343-1689. I'm living at Rechnoi Vokzal.

Layard is an interesting idea but I would like something more ethnographic...

I am definitely on for the money exhibition. money and happiness I will pass on, since I am working my way through a backlog of writing commitments like a corvee labourer and I have sworn not to take any more on. I cant think of someone else. Maybe Richard Layard?

we are planning an exhibition on money in Moscow, maybe we get you involved so that you can come. BTW I am looking for an author for a contribution to an edited volume "The Topography of Happiness". The contribution I need is on the question of money and happiness. Would you be interested? or maybe you can think of someone to recommend?

Never. One of the great gaps in my world travels. I heard Shostakovitch's 8th this week, composed in the year of my birth, begun when the Germans were moving into Stalingrad and ended after they moved out. What a truning point and what music, confirming my belief that America and Russia took artistic expression to the highest point yet achieved in the 40s. The US equivalent was Duke Ellington.
