looking for information on Bob Denard in the Comoros / implications in local tourism industry

Can anyone of you tell me about the relations between Bob Denard and the

hotel industry in the Comoros? I noticed that the Galawa hotel (the

islands' largest international hotel during the 1990s) is/was only a few hundred meters from Denard's former house. Or can anyone send me a link, or direct me to an author who has written about this? The Galawa opens in 1989; which appears to be when Denard was made to leave the

Comoros. Is there a link? The contract with Sun (who exploited… Continue

Australian Anthropological Society Conference 2010

I have finally managed to get to my first Anthropology conference, and it was worth it in more ways than I expected.

What will follow is my version of events. The conference was held over two days, and I got to listen to roughly about 16 speeches. One thing I would say about the conference, is that I wish all the other

speeches had been recorded as there were so many that I wanted to attend

but couldn’t because I was going to others.

The night…

Islamaphobia, sexism and American demagoguery in the 21st century

Mainstream media are flooding us with sensationalized images of Americans who fear and hate Islam. Ugly as these images are, there is a deeper brutality. The worst ugliness is in what they are not showing.

There are dangerous blind spots in the media coverage of American

Islam. For instance, there has been a brute blindness to women and to

women's concerns in news coverage of the proposed Islamic Center in New

York City.

At the center of the media firestorm is an…

What now? A non-trad anthro student considers the options

As a non-traditional student, I often find myself re-planning my future. A new school year has begun, and for the first time in a long time, I am not registered for any courses.... so something is up, and I need to once again evaluate what my future holds in terms of anthropology.

I have completed all the anthropology coursework for my B.A., and only two Spanish courses stand between me and a relatively useless degree. I'm rapidly approaching 50 years of age, and after some frank… Continue
