CALL FOR PAPERS: For the next special number of the Revista Sans Soleil Journal

ENCOUNTERS WITH THE OTHER (ENCUENTROS CON EL OTRO)

Visual construction and deconstruction of otherness (Construcción y deconstrucción visual de la otredad)

Reception open to collaborations up to June 1, 2012

Hic Sunt Leones, The Romans and cartographers of antiquity used to write to indicate those lands in which unexplored territories, areas which fell outside imperial power, untamed lands. To there, and then in the other direction that man has moved throughout the course of history, in search of the other, or encountering another without wanting to, not finding lions or dragons, but, on the other hand, with a reason to construct identities.

Today the other is just around the corner, is no longer a matter of exoticism, there are no terra ignota worth, and we still need references. Coming closer to the other, representing the other, to get where? Do we understand the other, or understand ourselves in relation to the other? And, why not, also the other that is being built sometimes ends essentializing the elements which have been attributed, now comfortable with the received image. And certain populations even claimed the right or the need for self-representation.

The potential of the image in the construction of otherness or self identity has been vital throughout history. The texts and audiovisual works certainly deserve a valuation as documents in the social science research.

This special number seeks to examine these issues and many others in order to understand a subject as vast and all-inclusive as this. Looking for feedback to inquire into the various media formats like video, comics, painting, film, propaganda, cartoon, poster, photography, tattoos, advertising, etc.

RELATIONS BETWEEN IMAGE AND DEATH (RELACIONES ENTRE IMAGEN Y MUERTE)

Anachronism, presence, absence (Anacronismo, presencia, ausencia)

Reception open to collaborations up to June 1, 2012

The relationship between image and death have remote origins, connected to the beginning of the firsts human ritual practices. These images reveal a presence that challenges the linearity of time, creating complex folds and ruptures that return to our present an anachronistic reality. For example, the skulls of Tell Ramad (7000 BC) demonstrate an impulse, saving the apparent distance, very similar to post-mortem photograph of the late nineteenth century: introduce the absence of a deceased through an image. One could trace similar examples as the use of death masks in ancient Rome, the wax votive in the Renaissance, in the memento mori from Baroque period, the photographs accompanying the tombstones in the cemeteries nowadays…

This special number aims to analyze these issues and many others that can demonstrate a relationship as complex and interesting as the binomial image-death.
